There are several different types of species of cockroach in the UK.
The 2 common species are the Oriental cockroach & the German cockroach.
Oriental Cockroaches or quite large shiny black cockroaches very similar to what you would have seen on TV and film. They lay and glue on egg capsules called oothecae in nooks and crannies. These egg capsules hatch in a few weeks releasing 12-18 cockroach babies which are called nymphs.
The nymphs then march on to feed, grow, moult (cast their skin), grow more and finally mate and lay eggs.
The German cockroach is different from the oriental cockroach in many ways. It is a lighter brownish colour with two dark stripes on its back.
It is also much smaller than the Oriental cockroach.
It does not lay eggs but actually carries the egg capsules partially in its body. This allows it to incubate the oothecae -aka egg capsule- faster allowing the babies to be released quicker. Also there tend to be more babies in this kind of ootheca -usually about in the region of 20-30 nymphs. This allows German cockroaches to infest a property far quicker than Oriental cockroaches.
However the oriental cockroach can be more troublesome in its own way as its eggs can hatch quite some time after you have had your home treated bring your problem back in full force if you are not careful in ensuring they have been eliminated.
There are other species of cockroaches that can occasionally be found in Glasgow and surrounding areas. These are the American cockroach, Australian cockroach and brown banded cockroach. These all have similar life cycles and behaviour. Please note that the name given to cockroaches does not reflect their country of origin!
There are approximately 4600 species of cockroaches in the world of which around 30 are found in human habitats of which the 5 mentioned above are the most common.
What to do and not to when you have cockroaches?
If you discover cockroaches in your home then you must take immediate steps to eliminate them from the property.
This will include taking a number of steps such as identification of the species, thorough and professionally done treatment of the cockroaches with follow-ups and the installation of monitoring traps to monitor and assess the situation whilst the treatment is ongoing.
You should wash all dishes before and after use, cover all open foodstuffs in sealed plastic containers and clean the house as regularly as possible to deprive the cockroaches of a food source.
We do not recommend spraying or putting down insecticidal powders to kill cockroaches.
I have yet to see someone eradicate a cockroach infestation by spraying supermarket grade insecticide. All most people end up doing is prolonging the problem and possibly spreading it.
Other important points to consider
If you are in a flat and you suspect a neighbouring flat is the source of your problem then you should speak to your neighbours and encourage them to get treatment done as well.
If they refuse to do so you can complain to the local authority environmental health department who can instruct the owners of the flat in question to take remedial action or the local authority will force them to through legal means. You must also still employ a professional to treat your own flat at the same time.

The only way to know the exact cost is to call us and get a quote. It is rare that we give someone a fright by giving them a high quote.
We tailor the solution to fit the problem and not try to fit the customers problem to our solution because it suits us better. This usually means our customers are not over or under quoted and have the best possible chance of eradicating their problem without unnecessary expense.
An example in point is being quoted a fixed price for 3 visits when you require 5 or vice versa. Another example is the fact that we know some companies which use cheaper chemicals -to them- that we stopped using 10 years ago as we found better quality materials which fixed the problem in less visits and hence less cost.
Is it safe to treat cockroaches around children and pets?
Yes it is completely safe provided you follow any instructions we give you pre and post treatment.
We have yet to have anything untoward happen during the course of a treatment and can assure you that as professionals we take great care to ensure our treatments are both effective and safe.
