Ant Control Glasgow

The most common species of ant found in the UK is called Lasius Niger or the black garden ant. This species of ant will make its way into homes through the kitchen or bathroom foraging for food and can quickly escalate in numbers if they find what they are looking for.

There are other exotic species of ants which can be found as well such as pharaohs ants, Rogers ants and ghost ants to name a few.

All ants follow a lifecycle which starts of as an egg which hatches into a larva which eventually becomes a pupa and then an adult ant. Overwhelming most people who contact us are familiar with the adult stage of the ant lifecycle where they see worker ants (sterile females) foraging in their homes and businesses for food.

The treatment protocol to follow can vary depending on the species of ants so identifying the correct species is crucial to achieving some degree of control over the population.

Insecticidal spray treatment, dusts and gels are commonly used to treat ants. The efficacy of the treatment can depend on a number of factors. We are aware of properties which get ants on an annual basis due to the property itself having ant colonies living in the fabric of the building and other places where they are just opportunistic intruders. Again treatment strategies and success can vary depending on the situation you are looking at.

An interesting point to note is that queen ants can survive for over 20 years in the wild. In fact an entomologist called Hermann Appel actually kept a queen black garden ant for over 28 years before it died. Thus the queen can continue to supply the nest with new worker ants every year for as long as it is alive meaning ants nests can become a perennial problem in some places

One phenomenon we routinely see on an annual basis is where people report swarms of ants -both flying and crawling -appearing in their home or business for hours or even days. This is referred to as the nuptial flight and is basically when the winged males and females mate. The males will die off as the mating process is completed and the winged females will disperse and go into hibernation ready to start building nests for next year. This can cause great disturbance when it occurs but thankfully is a temporary issue.
